Mechanics of Structures

Mechanics of Structures deals with the basic concepts of force, moment and its effect on structure. It helps us understand how different structures behave under the application of different kinds of loads or forces. This module helped me analyze the structural elements of the building as a way of ensuring stability of the building. A structure refers to a system of connected parts used to support a load.

A building with an RCC frame construction is shown in the diagram below. The whole load of beam and slab is transferred through columns to footing.

LEARNINGS-

1.The effects of various loads on buildings, as well as how can buildings protect themselves from these loads. A building needs to be able to withstand loads from the forces of nature and gravity in order to remain upright. Example- Shear walls and moment frames are examples of bracing mechanisms often used to provide lateral reinforcement to structures during earthquakes.

2.Understanding various components of structural system - columns ,beams, slab, foundation.

3. Any structure's design process begins with the choice of materials. Therefore, the procedure to determine the structure's safe, long-lasting, and cost-effective requirements, including the materials, technology, and the size of structural components needed to support loads for the duration of the structure's life is required.

4.Considerations will designing -

a. Foundation-loads from building, soil condition, soil bearing capacity and ease of construction.

b. Columns -Size of column, minimum Steel In Column, Alignment of column.

c. Beams - The section of the beam must be able to resist the maximum bending moment to which it is subjected.

5.The depth of the beam may be determined by the beam's span, while the breadth must be determined by the thickness of the walls. The type of structure will determine the size of the columns. For instance, the column size will rise if the structure has a large parking lot and more stories. However, it is important to choose the column and beam diameters so that they meet the structural safety criteria while still maintaining the building's aesthetic requirements.
